Civil Works project in Hammarsdale
Hammarsdale, KwaZulu-NatalRetainer wall built with a full subsurface drainage system to manage hydrostatic pressure.

Hammarsdale Retaining Wall & Subsurface Drainage
The site had a lot of water running underneath it. Water pressure builds up behind a retaining wall over time if it isn't given somewhere to go, and left alone that pressure damages the structure.
Excavated the trench and poured a concrete footing, setting the first course of retainer blocks halfway into wet concrete and filling each block core with more concrete for strength. A geotextile membrane behind the wall lets water pass through while keeping soil out, a perforated HDPE pipe runs along the base, and the backfill is 19mm crusher stone wrapped in the membrane.
The drainage system carries groundwater away from the wall instead of letting it build up behind it.
